Profile 96-99 (1 of 4)
Aims

Overcome the social and economic exclusion of unemployed young people living in some of the most disadvantaged parts of Liverpool (and therefore UK/Europe – Merseyside having been given ‘Objective One’ status) and their alienation from the training, education and employment markets;
Provide pathways out of unemployment and poverty;
Prevent drugs misuse and associated offending and crime, from leading to further economic and social isolation and exclusion for this most at risk group;
Put art at the heart of community development, giving substance to the recognition that economic, environmental and social regeneration will not be profound unless it includes a cultural dimension - especially for young people.
Objectives

To provide a training course which addresses some of the main barriers affecting young people:

qualifications – the course is fully accredited by the Open College Network;
experience – the course includes a work placement, tailored to the individual needs/wishes of participants, and/or ‘live’ projects, benefiting local groups and the local area, with practical key skills to close the gap between unemployment and work;
confidence – raising self-esteem, expectations and motivation towards positive, achievable goals and away from the negative pressures leading to drugs misuse and crime;
health – using issues, including drugs, thematically in the course content;
and to:

provide links to the latest developments in new creative technology, to offer routes into further training, education and employment, but also to raise horizons and open up global means of communication to people who feel abandoned and trapped in their own locality;
contribute to the long term cultural development, social, economic and environmental regeneration of the communities concerned, by bringing in external funding to equip high quality resources for community use and thus enable participation in a wide range of art forms; promoting practical partnerships to achieve this.
