Drugspotting : Solvents/Poppers (8 of 9)
Solvents are sniffed or breathed-in to get high, from things like lighter fuel, aerosols and some kinds of glue. Sniffing first causes a ‘rush’ that only lasts a short time, so users sniff again and again, making them feel dizzy, drowsy or see strange things. Afterwards a banging headache will probably result. Most of the things people sniff have dangerous chemicals in them that can cause black-outs and stop the lungs working. Over 100 young people die every year after using solvents, some of these are first time users. Poppers or Rush (amyl or butyl nitrate) causes the heart to beat faster and blood to rush to the brain, only lasting for a couple of minutes. Dizziness and a pounding headache are usually the result. Poppers are sniffed (swallowing the drug can be fatal) and are highly flammable. Keep well away from matches, ciggies, fires, etc.
People take drugs for a lot of reasons - some may have worries and it is a way to forget about them, others may be bored or want to have a good time.
